It’s Monday again and I’m joining up with Tara at 4th Grade Frolics for my second Monday Made It. I spent most of the time in my classroom today organizing all my Reading Street stuff (ugh!) but I did get around to finishing my mailbox. I “rainbow-fied” it with colored papers and it looks so much brighter and happier now! 🙂
Isn’t it cute? This is my favorite cardboard mailbox system to use for my students and it lasts for years. The first one I used didn’t need to be replaced until the end of its 6th year in use! Unfortunately, the only color available was this blue, which isn’t ugly, but it didn’t quite fit my rainbow-theme classroom. You could easily make this mailbox organizer fit whatever color scheme you have in your room by choosing complementing cardstock.
It was so easy to do and only took about 30 minutes to complete. I wouldn’t even really call this a tutorial because there’s not much to explain. Materials for this project simply included a pack of rainbow colored cardstock, Mod Podge, and a foam brush (along with the mailboxes of course). I glued the bottom of the paper as centered as I could get it in each slot and then I did one swipe of glue around the edges just to help seal the paper down and keep it from popping up over time.
I did the first few rows while the mailbox was assembled and it was a little more challenging trying to get the paper pressed down towards the back of the slots. If you have tinier arms than I do, it might not be a big issue for you, but I found that I was starting to bend the cardboard in places and I didn’t want that! After the first few rows, I took apart the mailboxes which was easy enough to do and then the process flew by. Because I used Mod Podge and not a glue stick, I’ve had zero problems with the cardstock coming unglued and becoming a problem when students try to slide their mail out of their slot. If you decide to spruce up your student mailboxes, tag me on social media so I can see how it looks!
I have so much going on this week and still so much to do that I’m feeling a little bit overwhelmed. Anybody else feeling the same? I’ve been working on cataloging and re-organizing my classroom library for days now and I’m only a quarter of the way done. Bleh! I never thought I’d say this, but maybe I have too many books! My sister-in-law had her baby yesterday and tomorrow I’m going out to dinner with my old 6th grade team. Thursday is my birthday and then Friday through Sunday my mother-in-law will be staying with us along with our three nieces. So…..I don’t foresee much work being done this week. I start the 20th and will have to get all this finished somehow. Never underestimate a teacher under a deadline though!
